Siemens Gamesa Breaks Record for Sustainable Offshore Wind Energy Generation

April 14, 2023by CN_MAR

Siemens Gamesa, a leading renewable energy company, has broken a new world record for energy generated over 24 hours with their latest offshore wind turbine prototype, the 14-222 DD. The turbine generated an impressive 359 megawatt-hours in a single day, equivalent to powering 18,000 households or keeping a Tesla Model 3 charged for over 1 million miles.

Siemens Gamesa’s offshore direct drive turbine technology has fewer moving parts than geared turbines, which has enabled greater performance improvements while maintaining reliability. One of the keys to the 14-222 DD prototype’s success are its revolutionary blades, cast from a single piece of recyclable resin. Although the company’s “RecyclableBlade” technology first appeared in an earlier turbine generation last year, the latest construction advancements have further optimized its offerings.

“We are proving that as the leaders of the offshore revolution, we are committed to making disruptive technology innovation commercially viable with the pace that the climate emergency demands,” said Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit.

The development of renewable energy technology is encouraging as the effects of climate change continue to have increasingly dire consequences for populations around the world. The first utility-scale facility, consisting of a solar, wind, and battery triple threat, recently came online in northern Oregon, capable of powering 100,000 homes with its combined 300 megawatts of wind, 50 megawatts of solar, and 30 megawatts of battery storage.

According to Siemens Gamesa, the 14-222 DD turbine is scheduled to go into production in 2024 and already has preorders from wind farms off the coasts of the US, UK, and Taiwan
