Cargolux, in collaboration with World Fuel Services, Neste, and Luxembourg Airport, has successfully introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Luxembourg Airport (lux-Airport). This significant milestone is part of Cargolux’s ongoing commitment to decarbonize its operations.
The delivery of the bio-based fuel to Luxembourg Airport’s fuel farm was made possible through the utilization of NATO’s Central European Pipeline System (CEPS). The SAF used by Cargolux is sourced from 100 percent renewable waste and residue raw materials, adhering to the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
By leveraging this sustainable aviation fuel, Cargolux will execute a carbon neutral flight from Luxembourg to Zhengzhou, which serves as its primary hub in mainland China. The arrival of the Boeing 747-8F in Zhengzhou will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Cargolux’s operations in the city. The ceremony will emphasize sustainability and the significance of establishing a “Green Silk Road” connecting Luxembourg Airport and Zhengzhou Airport.
Richard Forson, President and Chief Executive of Cargolux, expressed his satisfaction with the pioneering initiative, stating, “This marks a significant milestone for all parties involved, and I am proud of the seamless process we have witnessed from delivery to uplift.”
Alexander Flassak, Chief Executive of lux-Airport, highlighted the airport’s role as a facilitator and advocate of sustainability, saying, “As an airport, we are committed to promoting environmental friendliness. Encouraging our partners to adopt an eco-friendly approach aligns with our primary objective of achieving net-zero emissions for the airport infrastructure by 2030.”
Alexander Kueper, Vice President EMEA of Neste’s renewable aviation business unit, emphasized the collaborative effort in making SAF more accessible, stating, “This serves as a remarkable example of collaboration across the aviation value chain to enable the availability of sustainable aviation fuel. It builds upon previous deliveries of Neste’s SAF to Cargolux at Amsterdam Airport and underscores the significance of collective endeavors to offer more environmentally friendly fuel options at airports.”
