Amazon and Maersk’s Eco-Friendly Shipping Alliance Cuts CO2 Emissions

September 19, 2023by CN_MAR

Florham Park, New Jersey – A.P. Moller – Maersk and Amazon have solidified their partnership for 2023-2024, aiming to transport 20,000 FFE containers using green biofuel within Maersk’s “ECO Delivery” ocean product offering. This collaborative effort is expected to result in a significant reduction of 44,600 metric tons of CO2e compared to standard bunker fuel, equivalent to preventing the burning of 50 million pounds of coal. Notably, this marks the fourth consecutive year that Amazon and Maersk have opted for low GHG fuel alternatives for container shipping.

“We’re proud to collaborate with Maersk, a Climate Pledge signatory and a leader in shipping logistics, to work on actionable solutions for decarbonizing maritime shipping. We’re excited to have our containers on Maersk’s first methanol-enabled feeder vessel and to continue using their biofuel,” said Adam Baker, Vice President of Global Transportation at Amazon.

The ECO Delivery biofuel option offers immediate and externally verified GHG savings for customers without the need for offsetting measures. In a noteworthy development for this year, Amazon will benefit from an additional feature of the ECO Delivery product: the inclusion of green methanol alongside bio diesel as a second green fuel* in the vessel fleet. ECO Delivery employs precise fuel consumption data in its emissions reporting methodology, encompassing other greenhouse gases alongside CO2. Importantly, this new model provides price stability and certainty, independent of fluctuations in the fossil fuel market.

Amazon’s steadfast commitment to sustainable shipping, regardless of business conditions, underscores its dedication to building a better future. With a shared goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2040 as cosignatories of the Climate Pledge, Amazon and Maersk are continually exploring new opportunities for meaningful action. Decarbonizing shipping is a significant step towards securing our future, which must be complemented by various other initiatives.

Narin Phol, President North America at A.P. Moller – Maersk, stated, “Amazon’s track record in securing sustainable shipping solutions is a testament to its contributions to a better future. We share a common goal with Amazon to reduce our total GHG emissions to net zero by 2040. As cosigners of the Climate Pledge, we must constantly create new opportunities to make this a decade of action. Decarbonizing shipping is one significant step that is to be combined with many others to protect our future.”

The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Global Optimism and Amazon, is powered by over 400 companies in 38 countries globally. Signatories commit to three key principles: 1.) Regular measurement and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, 2.) Implementation of decarbonization strategies aligned with the Paris Agreement, and 3.) Neutralization of any remaining emissions through credible offsets. To learn more about Amazon and Maersk’s dedication to a sustainable future, visit the “Sustainability at A.P. • Maersk defines ‘green fuels’ as fuels with low to very low GHG emissions over their life cycle compared to fossil fuels. Maersk’s green fuels and supply chain are verified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). The emissions accounting methodology is based on GLEC (Global Logistics Emissions Council) and is certified by Smart Freight Center. Auto-generated performance tracking of Maersk ECO Delivery shipments is ensured, and CO2e saving certificates will be issued. The method is audited by PwC in accordance with the International Standard of Assurance Engagements 3410 (ISAE 3410 – Assurance Engagements on Greenhouse Gas Statements), demonstrating CO₂e savings for the scope of the Maersk ECO Delivery agreement.
