Cologne Bonn Airport has made a significant stride toward sustainability by adopting Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ for its diesel-powered ground fleet. Neste’s renewable diesel, also known as HVO100, is derived entirely from renewable sources, primarily serving as fuel for hefty vehicles like the airport’s fire trucks. This transition is poised to reduce the airport’s annual greenhouse gas emissions (CO2e) by nearly 3,000 tons when compared to the use of conventional fossil diesel.
Thilo Schmid, CEO of Cologne Bonn Airport GmbH, emphasizes the significance of this shift, stating, “The use of renewable fuel is another important building block and a very important addition to our concept for climate-friendly mobility.” He further underscores the necessity of diesel propulsion for certain vehicles, such as those employed by the airport’s fire department, noting that Neste MY Renewable Diesel provides an immediate decarbonization solution for such cases.
Cologne Bonn Airport has been at the forefront of sustainability initiatives, becoming one of the first German airports to offer Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ to airlines in 2021. This offering enables airlines departing from the airport to reduce their carbon emissions significantly. Currently, it stands as the exclusive German airport providing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Neste to airlines. Simultaneously, the airport has embraced Neste MY Renewable Diesel for its own diesel-powered ground fleet.
Peter Zonneveld, Vice President Sales of Neste’s Renewable Road Transportation business, expresses delight in Cologne Bonn Airport’s decision to utilize Neste MY Renewable Diesel for all diesel-powered vehicles while supplying Neste’s SAF to airlines, cargo operators, and business aviation customers. He sees this as a valuable contribution to the airport’s sustainability goals.
Importantly, transitioning the diesel-powered vehicle fleet at Cologne Bonn Airport to Neste’s renewable diesel did not necessitate any modifications to existing diesel vehicles. Neste MY Renewable Diesel boasts a chemical composition akin to fossil diesel, rendering it a seamless drop-in replacement. It remains fully compatible with all diesel engines and the prevailing diesel fuel distribution infrastructure.
In sum, Cologne Bonn Airport’s embrace of Neste MY Renewable Diesel underscores its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. This strategic move serves as a testament to the airport’s dedication to sustainable practices and the ongoing pursuit of a greener future.
