Australia, Singapore Partner on Low-Emission Tech Initiatives

July 25, 2024by CN_MAR

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have announced a grant call for proposals under the Australia-Singapore Low-Emissions Technologies (ASLET) initiative.

This initiative aims to accelerate progress towards a net-zero emissions future while providing bilateral economic benefits. The ASLET is supported by the governments of Singapore and Australia.

The objectives of the ASLET grant are to fund projects that will reduce the costs of using low-emission fuels and technologies, including clean hydrogen and its derivatives, and ammonia in maritime and port operations.

Additionally, the goal is to enhance the technical and commercial readiness of low-emission fuels and technologies in maritime and port operations. This includes increasing industry awareness and acceptance, supporting industry investment in low-emission technologies, and fostering economic and employment opportunities in both Australia and Singapore.

The initiative aims to develop technology and infrastructure at ports to support the adoption of low-emission fuels.

Projects can receive up to 30% support for non-SMEs and up to 50% support for SMEs from the MINT fund for qualifying items, according to MPA Singapore.

Through this initiative, Australia and Singapore aim to achieve reduced emissions in both countries, aligning with national and global emissions reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for shipping.

Applications for funding opened on July 15, 2024, and proposals must be submitted by September 13, 2024. Successful applicants will be notified in early 2025, and projects must be completed by June 30, 2027.

Recently, MPA Singapore collaborated with Japanese company NYK to accelerate maritime decarbonization, digitalization, and manpower development efforts, including the promotion of safe marine fuel use.
