Erik Thun Welcomes First Hybrid Lake Vanern Max Vessel

October 7, 2024by CN_MAR

Swedish shipping company Erik Thun has received the first plug-in hybrid dry cargo vessel in its next-generation Lake Vänern Max series, built by Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands.

The vessel, named Lidan, was delivered on October 2, 2024. Shortly after, Lidan completed its maiden voyage from Eemshaven to Wilhelmshaven for its first loading operation.

The 89-meter-long ship is specifically designed to navigate the Trollhättan canal and locks, which connect Sweden’s interior lakes to the North Sea, near Gothenburg.

Erik Thun has equipped Lidan, along with the five remaining vessels in the Lake Vänern Max series, with a hybrid propulsion system that combines battery power and traditional fuel. This hybrid setup optimizes energy usage and reduces emissions.

The propulsion system features a large-diameter propeller within a nozzle, delivering increased thrust at lower speeds. This reduces power demand in difficult conditions such as rough seas and icebreaking operations. As a result, the ship’s main engine power is reduced by 18%, cutting both fuel consumption and carbon emissions, according to Erik Thun.

Additionally, the vessels are equipped with shore power connections, allowing for silent and emission-free operations while docked. This capability helps improve air quality and reduces noise pollution in port areas.

“We are making a substantial investment to support our customers’ transportation needs and strengthen our position further in the short-sea market and Lake Vänern traffic,” said Senior Charterer Jens Bäckström, commenting on the delivery.
