SAIC Anji Logistics Receives First Custom-Built 7,800 CEU LNG Dual-Fuel Car Carrier
SAIC Anji Logistics, a logistics unit of Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corp, has officially received its first custom-built 7,800 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carrier from Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
The naming and delivery ceremony for the vessel, Anji Prestige, took place on December 23, 2024. After its maiden voyage to Europe, the car carrier is set to begin service on the US-Mexico route.
Innovative Design Features of Anji Prestige
The new roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship was designed by the state-owned China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). It incorporates a variety of advanced features, including:
- Wide Model Compatibility: Capable of transporting a broad range of vehicle models.
- Strong Cargo Capacity: Enhanced to handle a larger volume of vehicles.
- High Loading and Unloading Efficiency: Designed to optimize turnaround times.
- Flexible Fuel Selection: Supports both LNG and other fuels for greater operational flexibility.
- Low Fuel Consumption per Parking Space: More fuel-efficient, reducing operational costs.
- Green Energy Savings: Environmentally friendly features to reduce emissions.
- Automation: A high degree of automation enhances operational efficiency.
- Domestic Independence of Core Equipment: Most equipment is sourced from domestic suppliers, supporting local industry.
Key systems, including the WinGD 7X62DF2.1 main engine, iCER system, LNG containment and gas supply system, and RoRo equipment, were delivered by units within the CSIC group.
Upgraded Design and Increased Capacity
The Anji Prestige represents a significant upgrade from the previous 7,600 CEU model. With an expanded deck garage, it can now accommodate approximately 200 additional parking spaces, bringing the total capacity to 7,800 CEUs.
Previous LNG Dual-Fuel Ships
Earlier in 2024, SAIC Anji Logistics took delivery of its first LNG dual-fuel RoRo ship, SAIC Anji Sincerity. Featuring 7,600 parking spaces, this vessel was the world’s largest of its kind at the time. Its sister ship, SAIC Anji Splendor, was delivered in July 2024.
Fleet Expansion Plans
Over the next three years, SAIC Anji Logistics plans to strengthen its ocean-going fleet with 14 new vessels of varying sizes (7,000, 7,600, 7,800, and 9,000 CEU). Alongside LNG-powered ships, the company is also investing in methanol-ready newbuilds, aligning with its commitment to sustainable fuel solutions.
This strategic fleet expansion will support China’s independent automotive brands as they accelerate their global expansion efforts.
Strategic Investment and Collaboration
In line with this growth strategy, COSCO SHIPPING Group and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), two major Chinese state-owned companies, have each acquired a 10% stake in SAIC Anji Logistics. Each company invested CNY 1 billion (approximately $137 million).
The investment will strengthen the collaboration between these three companies, particularly in the global automotive supply chain. It is expected to support the “going global” strategy of Chinese automobile brands.
Supporting China’s Export of Domestically Built Cars
In addition to expanding its fleet, SAIC Anji Logistics intends to use the funds for enhancing its international business. This includes further investment in RoRo fleets and supporting logistics services, creating a “door-to-door” international full-chain service system for the export of Chinese vehicles.
The growing presence of China’s car carrier shipbuilding sector is further exemplified by BYD, the world’s largest manufacturer of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which also received two 7,000 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carriers this year.
