Algoma Central and Irving Oil Welcome First Methanol-Ready Tanker, Algoma East Coast
Canadian shipping firm Algoma Central Corporation and refining company Irving Oil have officially welcomed the arrival of their first methanol-ready product tanker.
The 37,000 DWT Algoma East Coast arrived at Saint John Harbour on April 28, 2025. Built at Hyundai Mipo Shipyard in South Korea, the vessel measures 184.08 meters in length and 27.40 meters in width.
This new vessel, along with its sister ship Algoma Acadian (expected to arrive later this spring), are ice-class product tankers ordered in 2023. Both ships will operate under the Canadian flag and will be on long-term time charter to Irving Oil.
Shore power-ready, the tankers will serve Canada’s largest refinery and deliver energy products to ports across Atlantic Canada and the U.S. East Coast. The investment in these vessels totals $127 million, a joint effort between Algoma and Irving Oil.

Both vessels will be deployed immediately upon arrival in Saint John.”
The tankers are set to meet Irving Oil’s logistics and distribution needs, strengthening the company’s supply chain across its service regions.

In related developments, Algoma Central Corporation also took delivery of three eco-friendly vessels in March 2025. These include the self-unloader Algoma Endeavour in Croatia, the Algoma East Coast, and the Fure Vesborg, delivered in China.
