Canada Post Introduces Carbon-Neutral Shipping for Domestic Parcels

May 25, 2023by CN_MAR

OTTAWA, ON, April 27, 2023 /CNW/ – Canadians now have the option of carbon-neutral shipping when using Canada Post’s ground services for sending parcels within Canada.

As part of its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Canada Post is taking immediate measures to assist Canadians and Canadian businesses in making sustainable shipping choices. All Domestic Regular Parcel™ and Expedited Parcel™ ground shipments, along with Canada Post’s flat rate boxes, are now shipped as carbon-neutral.

To offset every tonne of greenhouse gas emissions produced by these domestic ground delivery services, Canada Post removes an equivalent tonne from the atmosphere by purchasing high-quality, accredited carbon offsets.

Through Canada Post’s “Find a rate” tool, small businesses and consumers can determine the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their deliveries and select shipping options that align with their needs and preferences. There is no additional fee for carbon-neutral shipping

Projects for Canadian carbon offsets

Canada Post gives priority to Indigenous-owned or led, nature-based offset projects within Canada. Currently, Canada Post supports the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project, which safeguards forests from logging, preserves and enhances existing carbon stocks, and reduces emissions resulting from forestry activities such as harvesting and road construction. This project is fully owned by a unique alliance of First Nations, fostering employment opportunities while safeguarding the Great Bear Rainforest.

The carbon offset purchases made by Canada Post are recognized by the BC Carbon Registry under the Forest Carbon Offset Protocol and verified by an independent third party to ensure the credibility of carbon removal, confirming that it is both genuine and permanent.

Carbon offsets for carbon-neutral shipping do not contribute to the Corporation’s emission reduction targets.

The journey to net-zero

Canada Post remains dedicated to reducing emissions in absolute terms. As the Corporation progresses towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions, the need for offsets in carbon-neutral shipping will diminish over time. The company’s commitments and climate initiatives include:

Approval of climate targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which involve reducing operational emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions across the Corporation’s value chain by 2050.

Transitioning the Corporation’s fleet of 14,000 vehicles to electric power by 2040 (with 50 percent of the fleet being electric by 2030).

Implementing sustainable practices in Canada Post’s real estate portfolio, including the construction of new net-zero facilities, retrofits, and energy-efficiency upgrades.

Procuring renewable energy in provinces with the highest emissions and collaborating with energy suppliers to launch new renewable energy projects.

Lowering emissions throughout Canada Post’s value chain and collaborating with suppliers and subsidiaries to establish science-based emission targets by 2025.
