Chinese shipbuilder New Times Shipbuilding (NTS) has successfully delivered two eco-friendly, 159,000 DWT crude oil tankers to Greek shipowner TMS Tankers.
These vessels, launched at the end of September, mark the third and fourth installments in a series of four tankers ordered by TMS.
Environmentally Engineered Vessels
The newly launched tankers are designed to prioritize sustainability and efficiency. Measuring 274 meters in length, 50 meters in width, and 23.2 meters in depth, both vessels are equipped with TIER 3 engines and a 1,200 kW shaft generator. These features ensure compliance with Tier 3 nitrogen oxide emissions standards, significantly reducing their environmental impact.
Technical Specifications
According to NTS, the tankers—classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)—feature a design draft of 16.1 meters and a structural draft of 16.8 meters, with a cargo hold capacity of 180,000 cbm. Their advanced engineering includes NCR (nominal continuous rating) engines with a power output of 11,475 kW, and pre-shrouded vanes (PSV) to optimize water flow into the propeller, enhancing propulsion efficiency. Additionally, the vessels are outfitted with High-Velocity Air Fuel (HVAF) technology, which provides a 15% reserve capacity to manage varying sea conditions.
TMS Tankers’ Fleet Expansion
These two tankers join a growing fleet of eco-friendly vessels for TMS. NTS has previously built several ships for TMS, including the 157,600 DWT Suezmax Freud in 2018, which sails under the Marshall Islands flag.
More recently, in August 2024, NTS completed construction of another Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, the 159,200 DWT Suezmax Vadela, measuring 274 meters in length.
NTS’s Broader Shipbuilding Success
In addition to their work with TMS Tankers, NTS has continued to expand its shipbuilding portfolio. In April 2024, the shipyard delivered the tenth of twelve Newcastlemax LNG dual-fuel bunkers to Bermuda-based bulk carrier company Himalaya Shipping. Named Mount Denali, this vessel was chartered to a major commodity trading company for an initial term until December 31, 2026, with an evergreen structure thereafter.
Himalaya Shipping welcomed its final newbuilds in June 2024, further solidifying NTS’s role in the global shipbuilding industry.
