December 3, 2024by CN_MAR

Swedish shipping company Sirius Shipping has taken a significant step in its fleet renewal strategy by ordering four hybrid 7,999 dwt oil/chemical tankers from China.

The Ice Class 1A Evolution 8K series vessels will be constructed at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Dingheng, with deliveries scheduled for 2027 and 2028.

Vision for Sustainability and Technological Excellence

“A lot of hard work has finally paid off, and we are very excited. These vessels are an important step towards our vision – to become the long-term first choice for our colleagues, customers, and society. The vessels will, of course, be built to Sirius standards and incorporate the latest technology for future compliance,” said Jonas Backman, CEO of Sirius Shipping.

The new vessels are an updated version of the LNG-ready 7,999 dwt oil/chemical tankers Saturnus and Mercurius, featuring improved fuel efficiency and low-emission technologies.

Key Features of the Evolution 8K Series

These advancements align with Sirius Shipping’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency.

“With Evolution 8K, we’re taking another step forward in renewing the Sirius fleet. Designed in collaboration with FKAB, these new vessels provide the highest levels of sustainability, efficiency, and safety. They also feature excellent working conditions and comfortable living quarters for our crew,” the company stated.

Expanding the Sirius Fleet

This new order follows Sirius Shipping’s purchase last year of two plus two methanol-ready 15,000 dwt tankers from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard, Yangzhou. With the addition of the Evolution 8K units, Sirius Shipping now has six ships on order: two 15,000 dwt tankers and four 7,999 dwt Evolution 8K vessels.
